UK LGBTQ+ History Month recognises the achievements of the LGBTQ+ community while raising awareness of the challenges faced both historically and today. One of these ongoing challenges is homelessness.
According to Homeless Link, LGBTQ+ people are four times more likely to experience homelessness than their peers, particularly young people aged 18–25. Family rejection, lack of support, abuse, or being asked to leave home are often common causes.
Almost one in five LGBTQ+ people will experience homelessness in their lifetime, and many face increased risks of violence and discrimination while rough sleeping or in temporary accommodation. These experiences can make people reluctant to seek support.
We understand that providing safe and inclusive housing services is essential to delivering high-quality support at Elim, where inclusive practice is central to making sure everyone feels supported and valued. We continue to work in partnership with SARI, focusing on raising awareness of and tackling hate crime in our communities. This includes improving our understanding of the impact of LGBTQ+ hate crime, how we can best help people to access the right support and the barriers the community may experience.
